The Embassy Journal :A US delegation wrapped up its visit to Bangladesh today, focusing on strengthening the country’s economy, democracy, and labor rights. Led by Kelly M. Fay Rodríguez, U.S. Department of State Special Representative, and Thia Li, Deputy Undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Labor, the delegation also included representatives from USAID, senior leaders from major American brands like Gap Inc., PVH Corporation, and VF Corporation, as well as international labor experts such as Christy Hoffman, General Secretary of UNI Global Union, and Scott Nova, Executive Director of the Worker Rights Consortium.

The American brands represented in the delegation purchase approximately $1.8 billion worth of goods annually from Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector, underscoring the importance of a stable, sustainable, and rights-respecting workforce in the country’s economic growth.

At a critical time for Bangladesh’s democracy and governance, addressing long-standing challenges in labor rights is essential to ensuring national prosperity. Empowering workers is vital for sustainable economic growth, human rights, democratic stability, and gender equality.

The U.S. emphasized the shared responsibility of governments, buyers, employers, regulators, and labor unions to protect workers’ well-being globally, with a focus on secure and respectful work environments and the right to form unions and engage in collective bargaining, particularly in the RMG sector.

Labor reforms are a top priority for Bangladesh’s interim government, and the U.S. welcomed this commitment. The delegation encouraged Bangladesh to further strengthen workers’ rights to form independent trade unions and engage in collective bargaining for improved working conditions.

The U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to working with Bangladesh to ensure stable employment, quality work environments, and fair wages, improving the lives of workers and their families. With over 50 years of partnership, the U.S. is proud to stand with the people of Bangladesh at this historic moment.
