DHAKA: Marking World Press Freedom Day 2026, the Diplomatic Network of the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC) in Bangladesh has issued a strong and timely joint statement reaffirming its commitment to protecting press freedom, journalist safety, and democratic values across the world.

The statement, endorsed by diplomats from 13 countries — including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and others — highlighted both the progress and persistent challenges facing Bangladesh’s media sector.

The coalition welcomed the government’s stated commitment to strengthening press freedom but also warned about the growing dangers posed by misinformation and disinformation in the digital era. According to the statement, the most effective response to false information is not censorship or restriction, but a strong, independent, and professional media capable of delivering verified facts to the public.

The MFC emphasized that journalism can only flourish in an environment where reporters are protected from fear, intimidation, and undue pressure. The statement identified three essential pillars necessary for a healthy media ecosystem: a supportive legal framework, financial sustainability for independent media organizations, and complete editorial freedom from political or corporate influence.

The diplomats stressed that laws should safeguard freedom of expression and protect journalists from harassment or arbitrary legal action. At the same time, media organizations must have access to fair and transparent economic opportunities so they can maintain editorial independence without external pressure.

Another key point raised by the coalition was the importance of collective responsibility. Protecting journalists and preserving media independence, the statement noted, cannot rest solely on governments or media institutions. Instead, it requires close cooperation between state institutions, civil society, the private sector, and international partners.

The statement comes at a critical time as Bangladesh continues its social and economic transformation. Analysts believe a free and responsible press plays a vital role in ensuring accountability, exposing corruption, and strengthening democratic governance.

The MFC’s message serves as a reminder that media freedom is not merely a professional issue for journalists; it is a national democratic necessity. Ensuring the safety, dignity, and independence of journalists ultimately protects the public’s right to truth and transparency.

As Bangladesh moves forward on the global stage, the coalition urged all stakeholders to transform commitments to press freedom into practical and lasting action.
