Nationwide Outrage Over Demolition of Bangabandhu’s Historic Residence
Dhaka, Bangladesh – February 6, 2025
The demolition of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic residence at Dhanmondi 32 has sparked widespread outrage across Bangladesh. This house, deeply connected to the 1971 Liberation War and the country’s struggle for independence, was considered a crucial symbol of the nation’s history.
Bangabandhu, the architect of Bangladesh, was the leader of the independence movement. Under his leadership, millions of Bangladeshis joined the war for liberation. He was also widely respected by global leaders as a visionary and influential statesman.
The destruction of this historic site has triggered strong public condemnation. While a small group may have been involved in the act, reports suggest that nearly 80% of the population has expressed their strong opposition. Citizens, historians, and political figures believe that erasing such a significant part of Bangladesh’s past is an attempt to undermine the nation’s roots.
A protester voiced his frustration, saying, “This is not just a house; it is a symbol of our identity, our struggle, and our victory. You can erase Bangabandhu’s name or images, but you can never remove him from the hearts of the Bangladeshi people.”
As protests continue to grow, people across the country are demanding immediate action to protect historical landmarks tied to Bangladesh’s independence and the legacy of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
