Dhaka,Bangladesh : Ajit Singh, the High Commissioner of Canada to Bangladesh, is a distinguished diplomat, lawyer, and global leader with a proven track record of excellence in international relations and public service. His appointment as High Commissioner on November 20, 2024, marks a significant chapter in his illustrious career, underscoring his dedication to fostering strong international partnerships.

A Multicultural Foundation

Ajit Singh’s life story is one of global engagement and multicultural understanding. Having lived, studied, and worked across six countries on four continents, he brings a truly international perspective to his work. His rich cultural experiences have shaped his leadership style and his ability to build bridges across diverse communities and nations.

Academic Excellence

Singh’s academic achievements reflect his intellectual rigor and passion for public service. He holds:

A Bachelor of Arts in Communications (2003) and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Science (2004) from the University of Winnipeg.

A Master of Arts in International Law from the United Nations University for Peace (2006).

A Juris Doctor from Osgoode Hall Law School (2012).

These qualifications have equipped him with a deep understanding of global governance, law, and diplomacy.

A Distinguished Career

Ajit Singh began his professional journey in media, academia, and civil society organizations, gaining invaluable experience that would later inform his diplomatic career. Joining the Government of Canada in 2008, he held various strategic roles, including:

Serving in the Privy Council Office (PCO) on Intergovernmental Affairs and later on Foreign and Defence Policy, where he managed relations with Europe, Central Asia, and Latin America.

Leading the Foreign Policy Planning Division at Global Affairs Canada during Canada’s 2018 G7 presidency, where he played a key role in organizing the foreign ministers’ track.

Heading the Conflict Prevention, Stabilization, and Peacebuilding Division, demonstrating his commitment to global peace and security.

Becoming the first Director of International Crisis Response at the Privy Council Office in 2022, showcasing his leadership in managing complex global challenges.

In addition, Singh practiced private law in Toronto, where he was called to the Bar of Ontario as a barrister and solicitor.

Strengthening Canada-Bangladesh Relations

High Commissioner Singh presented his credentials to His Excellency Mr. Mohammed Shahabuddin, President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, on November 20, 2024. In this role, he is committed to enhancing the longstanding ties between Canada and Bangladesh, focusing on areas such as trade, education, climate change, and development cooperation.

His extensive background in diplomacy and crisis management positions him uniquely to address contemporary global challenges while fostering a relationship based on mutual respect and shared goals.

Throughout his career, Ajit Singh has exemplified leadership, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to advancing Canada’s interests on the global stage. Whether navigating complex geopolitical landscapes or building consensus during times of crisis, Singh’s contributions have been both transformative and enduring.

As the High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Ajit Singh embodies the values of inclusivity, collaboration, and vision, serving as a bridge between two nations committed to a brighter, more sustainable future.
