The Embassy journal,Dhaka, Bangladesh: The EU Delegation to Bangladesh expressed its gratitude to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus for hosting a meeting with Ambassadors of EU Member States and the Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to Bangladesh. This unprecedented exchange of views took place at the Chief Adviser’s office, building on a joint initiative to deepen EU-Bangladesh relations.

The meeting, which was open, interactive, and engaging, underscored the EU’s unwavering support for Bangladesh. The discussions highlighted a shared commitment to strengthening the EU-Bangladesh partnership, particularly following the recent launch of talks on a new comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation Agreement. The EU participants welcomed the reform ambitions of Bangladesh’s Interim Government and reaffirmed their readiness to assist the country in navigating its transition, emphasizing the importance of human rights, the rule of law, good governance, and the holding of free and fair democratic elections.

Participants recognized the transition as a critical opportunity to implement reforms, foster prosperity, and promote opportunities for all, particularly the country’s youth. The EU confirmed its intent to use available resources to support Bangladesh in meeting the aspirations of its citizens during this crucial period.

The meeting also served as a platform to emphasize the importance of upholding fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and media, gender equality, anti-corruption measures, climate action, energy transition, and regional cooperation. The EU acknowledged Bangladesh’s key role in hosting over a million Rohingya refugees, a responsibility it has shouldered with resilience.

In terms of economic cooperation, the EU delegation noted the significant potential for increased EU Foreign Direct Investment in Bangladesh. Both sides agreed to hold discussions in January 2024 to explore ways to ease business conditions and enhance economic ties, building on the newly established EuroCham. Additionally, the EU reiterated its offer to strengthen smart, secure, and open links through the Global Gateway strategy, with a key milestone being the January 2025 visit of the Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Overall, the meeting demonstrated a strong and positive outlook for the EU-Bangladesh partnership, with both sides committed to deepening their collaboration across political, economic, and social spheres to benefit the people of Bangladesh and the broader region.
